Some of Arsène Wenger’s Greatest Quotes
Wenger has provided us with some brilliant, frustrating, and downright hilarious moments over the two decades he has been in charge at Arsenal. As we get ready for the new season, we thought it was only right to take a look at some of the best quotes from his time as manager. From his spats with Ferguson and Mourinho, to his love of spending money, there have been some brilliant interviews and quotes from Wenger over the years.
Over the past few years, Wenger’s transfer market action, or lack of, has caused a stir with some fans. But, this quote sums it up perfectly…
“We do not buy superstars. We make them.”
How many times have we heard Arsene Wenger say he ‘didn’t see it’ when questioned about a foul his player has committed? Well, at least he is honest…
“Sometimes I see it, but I say that I didn’t see it to protect the players, and because I could not find any rational explanation for what they did.”
Arsene has provided us with many LOL quotes over the years, but this one about Tottenham certainly gave the fans a reason to laugh:
“I tried to watch the Tottenham match on television in my hotel yesterday, but I fell asleep.”
What about the time he called Jose Mourinho stupid?
“He is out of order (for calling Wenger a voyeur), disconnected with reality and disrespectful. When you give success to stupid people, it makes them more stupid sometimes and not more intelligent.”
He’s also had a few choice words for Sir Alex Ferguson during his time.
“He doesn’t interest me and doesn’t matter to me at all. I will never answer to any provocation from him anymore.”
Of Ferguson’s criticism of Arsenal in 2002, he said:
“Everyone thinks they have the prettiest wife at home.”
And when Wenger was asked if he had received an apology from Ferguson, he joked that maybe he had sent it by horse.
There was then the awful time that soup and pizza was thrown at Arsene during a game at Old Trafford, and it was believed that Ferguson knew who the culprits were:
“Ferguson’s out of order. He has lost all sense of reality. He is going out looking for a confrontation, then asking the person he is confronting to apologise. He has pushed the cork in a bit far this time.
Of course, referees haven’t escaped Wenger’s criticisms over the years too:
“It is well known the referees are protected very well, like the lions in the zoo, and so we have to love with their decisions.”
And, finally, what we have all been wondering; does Mr. Wenger like to splash his cash?
“I am not scared to spend money. If you go out with me one night, you will understand that.”
We’ll take you up on the offer! But, maybe not for dinner…
“I think in England you eat too much sugar and meat, and not enough vegetables.”
