Match Preview – Olympiakos vs Arsenal – Champions League – 09.12.15

Arsenal’s win over Zagreb gave them a slither a hope in the Champions League and confirmed a spot in the Europa League should they fail to beat Olympiakos by two clear goals tonight. That simply cannot be allowed to happen.

Players like Alexis and, to use his full name, Mesut F*cking Özil deserve better than playing on a Thursday night.

This is a situation entirely of Arsenal’s making and with an injury-stricken squad they really can’t afford to play a host of Thursday-Sunday fixtures. Arsenal is currently the best placed side in the league with a realistic chance of winning it, no disrespect to Leicester, and the Europa league is an unnecessary distraction from that. The Champions League is as much of a distraction, and strain on the squad, but it comes with prestige and exiting the Champions League in the knock-out rounds is nothing to lose face about. Getting knocked out of the Europa League is.

If Arsenal go into the Europa League they’ll be under pressure to win it and that could affect our domestic form. The Gunners are expected to win tonight but whether it will be by enough remains to be seen, especially with some key players sidelined.

Arsenal from; Cech, Macey, Chambers, Bellerin, Debuchy, Gabriel, Koscielny, Gibbs, Mertesacker, Monreal, Flamini, Reine-Adelaide, Özil, Campbell, Giroud, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ramsey, Iwobi, Walcott.

Predicted Line-up

Cech, Bellerin, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Monreal, Flamini, Ramsey, Özil, Campbell, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Giroud

I expect to see substitute appearances from Walcott, Chambers and Reine-Adelaide.

Match Quote

“We have gone 15 times out of the group consecutively so you could say that is a good habit”  – Arsène Wenger

  • Arsenal 3-1 Olympiakis (03.10.2012)

Form Guide

Arsenal Last 5

Olympiakos Last 5

Opposition watch

Arsenal should be too strong for Olympiakos but we’re playing at their home and they know that even a narrow loss will see them qualify so I fully expect them to defend deeply. Cambiasso should be fit for selection which will give them added steel in midfield. This is likely to be a really scrappy fixture.

  • Arsenal have drawn one and lost four of their last five away games in Greece
  • The Gunners have won seven and lost four of their last 13 away fixtures in the Champions League
  • Olympiakos are aiming to reach the last 16 for the second time in three seasons

3-0 to Arsenal.
