Arsenal triumphed over Chelsea in the Community Shield on Sunday, leaving Gunners fans increasingly optimistic about the forthcoming campaign. Many of them were particularly impressed with the performance of midfielder Granit Xhaka and the Swiss star will be aiming to lead his side back into the top four of the Premier League.

It’s safe to say the 24-year-old divided opinion last season after arriving from Borussia Monchengladbach but started to find form towards the end of the campaign. However, he wasn’t able to prevent his side dropping out of the top four, and they also finished below bitter rivals Spurs for the first time since 1995.

The midfielder was criticised for his overly combative style, accumulating yellow cards throughout the campaign, which led to him missing five games through suspension including a crucial clash with Chelsea. He has told the media that he won’t be changing his style or deviating from his militant approach anytime soon.

Xhaka claimed an assist at Wembley as his side were victorious on penalties in the curtain raiser for the new season and fans will be hoping for more of the same when the Gunners host former champions Leicester on Friday night.

Arsenal supporters took to social media to register their pleasure at the midfielder’s performance, with many of them delighted that he outshone former fan favourite Cesc Fabregas in the centre of the park. This is likely to be a make or break season for Xhaka and there is talk of him possibly commanding the captain’s armband on a regular basis. He’s already captained his national side and appears to be a natural leader on the pitch.

Another player who impressed at the weekend was Sead Kolasinac, who netted on debut and showed plenty of quality down the left-hand side. He appears to be strong and decent with the ball at his feet and fans are also understandably excited about his addition to the side.

A number of pundits have written off their title credentials this season. The Gunners have drifted in price and are currently 11/1 to finish top of the pile in May 2018. Manchester City, meanwhile, have been priced up as 7/4 favourites following some eye-catching recruitment this summer.

Arsene Wenger’s first aim will be to reinstate his side into the top four. The Gunners finished outside the Champions League spots for the first time since the 1995-96 season and they are priced at 5/6 to reclaim that coveted fourth position next year.

If Arsenal are to improve this season, Granit Xhaka is likely to play a pivotal role in the heart of the midfield. He is still likely to be troubling the referee’s notebook but his confidence is sky high and he is slowly winning over the fans at the Emirates. The Swiss international could finally be living up to his price tag and he’ll be desperate to bring Champions League football back to the red half of North London.
