Arsenal social media roundup
Social media is important to younger fans of Arsenal. Not only is it part of our identity and culture but for many it’s the only way to connect with the players on a human level. Older generation fans will wistfully reminisce about the days players would pop into the local boozer after a match before money changed the relationship for good. Younger fans know no different from the distance between the fans and players, where often the closest you ever got to them was waving at their car as they exited the stadium.
The advent of social media has changed that and we can see more of our player’s lives and personalities than ever before. Thankfully, Arsenal seems to be pretty hot with new trends and is making the most of Snapchat, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter.
Lukas Podolski was the darling of Twitter with excellent banter and Sp*rs baiting but now he has gone King Mesut is our most retweeted player. Yesterday he tweeted a farewell to Mathieu Flamini who has joined Crystal Palace. Despite being a billionaire who spend his days on a private island or swanning around Monte Carlo he has decided he’d rather play football ( and with this detailed guide to the best online casinos that accept players worldwide he doesn’t really need to go Monte Carlo.) We gave him some stick last season for his performances but we should never doubt his desire. Good luck, Mathieu.

Over on Instagram new signing Shkodran Mustafi has been posting photos of his first week in training as an Arsenal player. The German international will be hoping to make his debut against Southampton this weekend and at £35m he is Arsenal’s joint 2nd biggest transfer ever behind national and club teammate Mesut Özil. The ex-Valencia defender has previous experience of playing in England having joined Everton as a teenager. Judging by this video clip he’s pretty excited about being a Gunner.

The Arsenal media team has been working hard over the last few years to bring top quality content to their social media fans. A lot of older fans find it a bit cringeworthy or think Arsenal is too good to make goofy videos but the younger fans love it. And as they are the social media audience don’t expect this to stop any time soon.
Arsenal Player, YouTube and Snapchat is the platform for their comedic efforts and in the past we’ve seen Szczesny and Oxlade-Chamberlain perform better in front of the camera than they have on the pitch and Ray Parlour try to teach Podolski Cockney rhyming slang. The media team have taken inspiration from that hilarious clip with this new one where local boy Alex Iwobi tries to teach Granit Xhaka and northern lad Rob Holding about London slang.
As well as the behind the scenes video of the Legends match at the weekend plus the excellent announcements of Mustafi and Lucas Perez this has been a pretty fun few weeks on Arsenal social media. Please keep it up.
