All Time Greats – Which Gunners Would Make The Cut?
Watching the Champions League on Wednesday night brought up a whole host of emotions. Firstly, there was a little bit of disappointment that Arsenal were not there. Secondly, there was some excitement at watching some truly magnificent players take to the field. Thirdly, there was a hint of lament over watching Ronaldo and knowing he was almost an Arsenal player. Lastly, there was a wave of nostalgia as I remember great European nights for Arsenal and some of our greatest ever players.
Gooners are extremely lucky to have seen some of Arsenal’s greatest ever players take to the field but more so because many of them took to the field together. We are truly privileged to have seen Bergkamp, Campbell, Vieira, Pires and Henry on the same pitch and wearing the same shirt.
With new sponsorship deals, including an improved deal with Emirates Airline, coming into effect this summer you can imagine, or at the very least hope, to see some stellar additions made to Arsenal’s first team. Maybe we’ll be able to look back on the coming era and say we were lucky to see Özil, Ramsey, Wilshere, Koscielny, Walcott and (Insert Striker Here) together.
Watching the World Cup this summer might give us a glimpse at some of the players we could be spending that Emirates money on. Emirates is a strong supporter of football, being the Official Partner of the FIFA World Cup since 2006 and as an Arsenal partner I’m sure they’d love to see a current or future Arsenal star light up the World Cup this summer. We are not far off the World Cup in Brazil and Emirates is getting in the mood by introducing their latest initiative uniting their involvement in the sporting world with their exquisite services on board their wonderfully crafted airliners in an amusing video.
World-class striker Cristiano Ronaldo has become an Emirates’ Global Ambassador and has teamed up with Brazilian legend Pelé, who has been a Global Ambassador since January, to release this humorous video:
You can watch the Emirates video here.
I like adverts that make you laugh and this one tickled me but it also got me thinking because by putting these two players together they further highlight that every generation of football lovers has a hero, and views differ as to who is the ‘greatest’ of all time. We see it now with Ronaldo and Messi and they are added to the debate alongside Pelé and Maradona.
As an Arsenal supporter I see the debate over who is better: Henry or Bergkamp? I think it is incredibly hard to choose, and neither were ever awarded the Ballon d’Or (a travesty in my opinion), but my heart plumps for Bergkamp. All Time Greats always have an element of bias to them and Bergkamp is mine.
Although, the unbiased part of me would vote for Ronaldo as my greatest player of all time. What is great about the video, which you really should watch, is it is easy to imagine it being any two players and that is what makes the discussions over who is the greatest of all time so exciting and full of variety. Everyone has a different reasons for loving a certain player. Watch the video and let me know who your greatest footballing hero is, the debate continues on Twitter using #AllTimeGreats
