Which trophy should the Gunners have their eyes on?

The new season brings new optimism for Gunners but will Unai Emery be able to deliver a much needed trophy in his debut season?

The former PSG boss brings with him a winning mentality following successful spells in Spain with Valencia and Sevilla and in France with Paris St Germain but can he add that much needed trait to this group of Arsenal players and which trophy should we be looking at going all in for?

Premier League

The league title is the dream for all Arsenal fans but disappointment after disappointment since the 2003/04 invincible season has made success in the league a distant dream.

Last season was as disappointing as it has been in the recent era, with Arsene Wenger even unable to sustain a good challenge for fourth. Defensive incapabilities held back the attacking prowess at times with individual mistakes once again a common and recurring theme.

Mistakes that were preventable and often produced by players of the highest level. Emery was quick to address the defensive issues with signings of Bernd Leno and experienced defenders Sokratis and Stephan Lichtsteiner, all of whom will be expected to have big seasons and hit the ground running.

The weak spine of the side has been a recurring theme though this seems to have been addressed by the signings of new defenders and Lucas Torriera who stood out at the World Cup in Russia.

With players like Lacazette, Aubameyang, Ramsey, Mkhitaryan and Özil there was little to do with the attack and although some of Arsenal’s creative and attacking players can sometimes be questioned their class is undoubtedly there. Özil has been touted as a possible captain for the season, speaking to Sky Sports, Emery said: “I am thinking about Petr, Aaron and Mesut. Then I need to find one or two more.”

The Gunners are currently a long shot to win the big one, priced at 21/1 to win the Premier League.

Europa League

Emery made the Europa League his bread and butter during his time at Sevilla, winning three titles in a row between 2013 and 2016. The second-tier of European competition shouldn’t be undervalued by fans this term as it could mean a trophy while also another route into the Champions League.

Of course, this isn’t the club’s first taste of the competition with most of the squad involved in last season’s agonising tie against Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals. It was a case of so close but yet so far in Wenger’s last European tie with the Gunners first leg being their ultimate downfall.

But with a full strength squad there are not many teams in the competition that could cause problems for the Gunners. At the end of the day it would be a trophy and that’s exactly what the fans crave and what Emery will need to show progression this season.

Arsenal are valued at a good price (9/1) for Europa League glory next season while, the Gunners to win any trophy is valued at 2/1.

FA Cup/EFL Cup

Although he often fielded reserves and youngsters in the earliest rounds Wenger always paid respect to the oldest cup competition in the world, and his record 7 FA Cup wins is testament to how much he loved and valued the competition. The League Cup however was generally used by Wenger to blood younger talent so it’ll be interesting to see how it is viewed by Emery. Will he field an elite line up or once again play the ‘kids’?

With the arrival of Lorient midfielder Matteo Guendouzi and youth team graduates Reiss Nelson, Eddie Nketiah and Emile Smith-Rowe all looking for first team opportunities, it remains likely that some youth players will be tested in the domestic cups.

The latter of the three got fans excited as his performances over pre-season were eye catching, including a wonderful winner against Atletico Madrid.

The Gunners are 9/1 in both betting markets to win either competition. While, to win both the EFL Cup and FA Cup is an outside bet at 50/1.
