Arsenal Target French Keeper

Arsenal have been linked to unknown AS Nancy goalkeeper Paul Nardi in the French media and whilst it’s not the type of signing people were hoping for or indeed the position, I think it could be an answer to a deepening chink in our armour but with a different player.

Wojciech Szczesny has been a mainstay in the Arsenal first team for a few years now and unable to usurp his younger compatriot Lukasz Fabianski appears to be on his way out this summer.

Fabianski has been Arsenal’s FA Cup goalkeeper this season and has performed more than admirably – so much so many have called for him to play league games ahead of Szczesny and this has highlighted an issue with Arsenal in the goalkeeping department.

Once Fabianski leaves and Emiliano Viviano returns to Italy, Arsenal will be left with a very young, albeit experienced, Szczesny as the main goalkeeper and his competition will be young Argentine, Damian Martinez and 18 year old Bristolian, Matt Macey.

For all of his talent and confidence Wojciech suffers from over confidence at times and having almost irrelevant competition for his spot may let complacency creep in.

It could be said that 19-year-old Nardi, who broke into the AS Nancy first-team this season and has made himself the assured number 1 with some commanding performances, conceding 27 goals in as many appearances, would offer competition to Szczesny but can we afford to have such “green” keepers across the board?

Both his lack of experience and English football should in all sanity rule him out of the running to replace Fabianski as our number 2. Arsenal need someone of experience to challenge Szczesny for the number 1 spot but as with all top level talents there is a shortage of options.

Goalkeeper isn’t the most glaring of fixes for Arsenal this summer with many believing the priority to be a striker and a DM but even the best bookmakers are shortening the odds on Arsenal signing a senior keeper this summer so strike whilst the iron is hot.

A name many would like to see at Arsenal is Iker Casillas, who has had to play second fiddle to Diego Lopez at Real Madrid this season but would his large price tag and huge wages represent value for money despite his big name when so many are clamouring for a striker?

With that in mind would Nardi represent a better option? He wouldn’t be the marquee signing that Casillas would be but he could be picked up for a relatively small fee and that would leave more funds available for more pressing positions.

Would having quite a few players of a similar age improve the competition for places or could it force a few promising talents to look elsewhere for game time? I think it would be dangerous not to have someone with experience who could step up should Szczesny fall ill, injured or foul to his own ego.

Nardi and Casillas occupy two ends of a spectrum so could we go for someone in the middle? Someone like Guillermo Ochoa who is available on a free transfer this summer maybe?

What do you think? Should we buy a keeper this summer and if so who? Backup keepers of the quality of Fabianski don’t grow on trees and one very lucky club is going to get the bargain of the year this summer with him. Shame it’s not going to be us.

One of the best and most consistnet keepers in the Premiership this season has been Julian Speroni of Crystal Palace. 34 year old Speroni is out of contract at the end of this season and the Club have not started talking to him yet. A cult hero at Palace his stated preference is to stay put but would probably find it hard to turn down an offer from Arsenal and my guess is he would come at a very competetive price!
