With the Euros fast approaching now is the season when the internet is awash with official and not-so-official England songs. These efforts are equally likely to cause bleeding ears as a smile on fans faces. Occasionally, an unofficial tune outshines the bland offerings of FA certified England songs -remember the cheeky Fat Les anthem Vindaloo? At the minute, there’s no sight of an official England song; perhaps it’s a small mercy, with recent efforts including Tony Christie ripping himself off with ‘Is this the way to the World Cup?’ So, this year it seems, England fans will have to settle for unofficial songs to soundtrack their tournament.

‘The 1966’ is just one group of plucky upstarts attempting to break into the charts and chant their way into England fans hearts with their tune ‘We’re Gonna Win The Euros’. The song was written and produced by a team of students from the School of Communication Arts in collaboration with voucher site MyVoucherCodes. It can be downloaded from iTunes for 59p and is available on Spotify, with all proceeds going to Nordoff Robbins, the music therapy charity. ‘We’re Gonna Win The Euros’ aims to prove that supporting England doesn’t have to cost a fortune, with the song and music video having been produced for a paltry £19.66, in a nice, and also, convenient twist. The song also helps to promote the money saving offers that MyVoucherCodes.co.uk has curated to coincide with the competition. These savings can be made on transport, footie shirts, hotels and restaurants, and goodness knows, with prices set to be hiked up for the tournament, it’s vital to pinch every penny possible.

Whilst not the most polished sounding, the song is so catchy and definitely chant-able too. We can just see a group of fans chanting this arm in arm after a 4am curry and too many Stella Artois. Poking fun at the likes of Sven, Roy Hodgson, Gary Linekar and Gareth Southgate, ‘The 1966’ – see what they did there? – are certainly a fairly cynical bunch. But in the end, like true England fans, they can’t quite give up that TINY glimmer of hope, that, this might finally be our year. And, like them, we hope that the likes of Harry Kane, Sterling and Hart will get lift the cup this time. Sing along now: “For All Our Hurt, We’ve Still Got Three Lions On Our Shirt”.
