Why I’m Getting Ramsey On My Shirt

Those of you who read this blog regularly and follow me on twitter will know that I have never bought a shirt with a players name on. I was once given a shirt with Parlour’s name on it but have never spent my own cash on an Arsenal shirt with a players name but I think that is about to change.

I almost bought an Ashley Cole shirt about 4 months before he left for Chelsea but something, call it divine intervention if you will, stopped me at the last minute and I got my usual “COWAN 4” (I know, I’m a grown man but I haven’t done that for the past 2 shirts so maybe I’m growing up).

You can imagine how thankful I was for not buying that shirt when Cashley moved to Chelsea later that summer. Despite loyalty never really being a massive problem when I was growing up and through to the Invincibles season I was never compelled to buy a players shirt.

Players I have loved over the years and whose shirts I have considered buying have all left, Cesc, Nasri, RvP; and I said that I would never consider buying a players shirt for the rest of my life but always said that if I did, it would be Ramsey’s.

And now it seems that I will. We are probably going to change kit manufacturers next year so I should probably wait but when you can sell your old replica shirt and use the money to buy a new one why wait?

Regular readers and long-time twitter followers will know that I have firmly been behind Ramsey since before he broke his leg and my support has never wavered.

Ramsey has had a blinding start to the season but to those that have loved him for a long time they know that this is just an extension of the excellent form he has shown pretty much the whole of 2013.

The reason I am getting a Ramsey shirt is purely because he is my favourite Arsenal player. He has shown tremendous loyalty to Arsenal to fight his way into the team after a career threatening injury and make himself almost undroppable after signing a new contract committing his future to Arsenal when a large proportion of supporters couldn’t stand the sight of him.

Ramsey has become one of the top midfielders in Europe and I couldn’t be happier for him.

His passing stats are incredible, he is bossing the midfield, making tackles, breaking down attacks, starting attacks, finishing attacks and generally making the team tick.

So at some point in the next week or so I will be buying myself a RAMSEY 16 shirt and I will wear it with the pride and smugness of a man who has supported him throughout his career at Arsenal and not just now he is “little bit top top player”. I think I’ve earned the right to gloat a little 😉

Why would anyone over the age of 16 get a players name on their shirt? Never got than and never will.

Lol, I usually don’t and haven’t had a players name since I was 8 but almost 20 years is a long time to not get a players name so I will buy a Ramsey one although I doubt I’ll ever wear it 🙂 I’ll try to get it signed and then frame it or something.

    Nice post Daniel.
Don’t worry about the hater’s, they will now either be conspicuous by their absence or absent minded of their conspicuousness – what a load of bobbins 😉 Anyway, Ramsey is a class act and people, don’t forget he was still learning his trade when he had his leg broken so that is bound to knock the stuffing out of any young man.
I personally never had any opinion of his poor performances and am happy to say that I too am enjoying his current form.
P.s Glad to hear you are leaving your youth behind and buying a shirt with a players name on….;-)

I was appalled at the collective groan / boos when Ramsey was substituted on last season during the Man City game (I think). FFS, if you’re not going to support the players, don’t go to the f*cking match.

No wonder our away form is so good…the crowds are less hostile!

I think you are spot on..I am always worried wen, rather than spur (not our noisy neighbours) the boys on, we boo them even @ Emirates…..So, i agree with you that the our performances on the road might just be hinged on the number of supporters available who wont dare boo them…but it calls for concern and maybe soe education from the club to appeal to supporters that thru thick and thin, your club should be supported…The Supporters Football club should do better thatn also query AW anytime things dont go the club’s way…….

  5. Well said Mr Cowan. I’ve fought a similar battle about Ramsey in the Dublin Arsenal Supporters club and err…….won

I’ve always trusted ramsey even when critics gave me the stick,i love him for three things then his dedication, will to succeed & high octane work rate, but i must honestly point out, he piques me because he wasn’t gettin’ it right then…but i trusted his potentials….well done rambo, you are truly class, keep it up.

  7. Markus says:

PRIDE. You stated it in your article already.

The word I associate with Ramsey, and have done every time I’ve seen him take to the field since his injury. The reason I could never fathom the criticism, even when he had an average game for us. He never had a bad game in my eyes.

Who are these robots who don’t feel this same deep sense of pride? Who even now, when the lad is in the form of his career – the best midfielder in the league and Europe, don’t feel pride, but rather begrudgingly give him his due credit and claim he has just now finally started to deliver.

    I pity the fools.

I have always told my fellow fans and supporters here in Nigeria (they see me as a blind loyalist to the club) that Ramsey has been the most underated and underappreciated player…all they needed to look was his form before the horrible break from Shaw Crass (ops cross) and they would know what a talent he is….RAMBO has not proven me wrong..At 24, he still has his better yrs ahead to be the commanding midfielder he is expected to be barring injuries….same for Abu Diaby….Arsenal have been unable to reap their investment in him and if he eventually egts out of his misery, only the opponents can say what damage he would do …….Keep up the good work

  9. Andy says:

Nicely written. I have a Ramsey 16 home shirt from the 2010/11 season, which has been worn so much that there is almost no sign of the “Fly Emirates” on the front anymore. It’s still my favorite shirt and I feel a bit happier and more proud everytime I put it on.

    Well said!

    Great post

Great feeling eh ? Being proved right ………..

Don’t get to games as too many commitments at home kids, work etc etc so didn’t realise the abuse of the lad got as bad as you described

Whoever was responsible should be ashamed because even tho his form dropped his desire was never in question

I truly do believe that with this team we could be on the verge of winning things and Rambo will be a major reason why…… The lad is awesome
