Match Preview – Burnley vs Arsenal – Premier League – 11.04.15

Underestimating relegation threatened teams at this stage of the season has been the death of many ambitious sides. With 7 wins on the trot, 15 wins in their last 17 Premier League matches and a trip to Wembley to look forward to it’s little surprise that Arsenal are favourites for this match but complacency is a trait best left to antiquated career politicians.

Arsenal “should” dispatch of Burnley but that is not because of their league positions but more because of the array of talent and momentum Arsenal has.

It is at this time of the season that relegation threatened teams tend to come into their own as they fight desperately for survival and anyone who has looked at Burnley’s performances rather than their league standing will know that this game will be no cakewalk.

A lot rides on this match as another Arsenal win keeps them within touching distance of an unlikely late title surge and could put some daylight between them and one or both of the Manchester clubs who also play this weekend. Burnley too have a lot to play for as their rivals have tough games too and they could leap out of the bottom three with a win. It’s hard to predict how Burnley will play and what result that will earn them but if you do fancy yourself as a bit of a predictions machine join me on the Dohyo Premier League predictions app for iOS and test your abilities against me and others in the “NLIR” and “Goonersphere” leagues – there are prizes up for grabs for the league winner.

Thanks to Crystal Palace 2nd place is in Arsenal’s hands and for what seems like the first time in forever Arsenal have an entirely fit squad to choose from bar one player and it’s not Diaby!

Giroud is in stonking form, as it Özil so I fancy them to run the show again.

Arsenal from; Szczesny, Ospina, Gibbs, Gabriel, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Chambers, Monreal, Bellerin, Ramsey, Coquelin, Özil, Rosicky, Walcott, Welbeck, Cazorla, Alexis, Giroud, Akpom.

Predicted Line-up

Ospina, Debuchy, Gabriel, Mertesacker, Monreal, Coquelin, Özil, Cazorla, Ramsey, Alexis, Giroud

I expect to see substitute appearances from Welbeck, Chambers and Walcott.

Match Quote

“We look behind us and people are chasing us, in front of us there’s quite a big distance with Chelsea but we work very hard to reduce that. They have a difficult schedule and we have a difficult schedule. What we can only do is master our own schedule”  – Arsène Wenger

Opposition watch

It’s easy to say that Burnley are in the bottom three for a reason but it is hard for promoted teams to perform to their best level week after week because of squad size, experience and the intensity of the league. Often by the time they are used to the league enough to cope with it they are already relegated.

Burnley were impressive in their win against Manchester City and completely contained Tottenham last weekend. If they could perform to the level they are capable of with their current squad they could comfortably be a decent mid-table side. They have some quality and are pretty resilient as they have shown by taking points of Chelsea and both Manchester clubs this season.

Safety may well be beyond them but they won’t go down without a fight and Arsenal will have to be wary of being dragged into a scrap with a fighter banking on a puncher’s chance.

Factfile

  • Burnley are unbeaten in four league matches at home
  • Arsenal have won 7 games on the bounce, their best since the Invincible season
  • Half of Burnley’s points have come against top 10 opposition
  • Arsenal haven’t lost to bottom 10 opposition this season
  • Burnley have conceded 17 goals from headers this season
  • Arsenal have scored 20 goals from set-pieces this season – a league high
  • Burnley have kept clean sheets in their last two home games
  • Arsenal have the same record this season as they did at the same stage last season
  • Burnley have the most consistent line-up in the league, fielding the same side 16 times
  • Giroud has scored in his last 6 league games, if he scores in this one he’ll equal Adebayor’s record
  • Özil has 3 goals and 4 assists in his last 8 league games

Prediction

I think Arsenal will have too much for Burnley so I’m going for 3-0 to Arsenal with Ramsey, Özil and Giroud on the scoresheet.

  1. Andy Kelly says:

Giroud won’t equal the club record for scoring in league games. Contrary to popular belief, football didn’t start in 1992.

I’ve made my feelings on this opinions clear on Twitter. I find it a touch arrogant. A Premier League record is still a record. I don’t make the comparisons you make with different eras because the game is different in every era. Football is different now to how it was when Arsenal went unbeaten. Is Arsenal’s unbeaten record more impressive than Preston’s from way back when? Of course it is. The league was much harder, faster and more technical. Not to mention almost double the amount of games and European pressures making it harder to recover between matches.
Time is important in football. It is futile to compare eras and frankly, equalling or beating a recent record is more relevant than matching an 80 year old one because the stages of evolution are much closer.
