Early reports suggest Roy Hodgson has chosen three of our favourite Arsenal players to be part of the English national team flying out to the 20th World Cup in Brazil. It is hard to tell how the championship is going to end for England, although the odds are not in their favour. At least for the past few months the favourite teams for the world championship this year are Argentina, Brazil, Germany and Spain in that particular order. There’s been a lot of talking regarding England’s odds, currently at 33/1, but a lot can happen in the next few months. Of course it will not be clear which English players will be chosen to represent their nation in Brazil, but we do have some hints about which Arsenal boys could be heading to the world’s biggest competition on the England plane. 2014’s World Cup is set to have more bets placed than any previous tournaments. Actually, since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa there has been a number of fans doing live betting, which has increased the number of online betting users since the 2006 games. But even if England is not set to become world champion this year, which is quite likely, we can still bet on our Arsenal boys getting a few goals. So which Arsenal players might be on the England plane?

Jack Wilshere

Wilshere has shown the world his best qualities and potential since the age of 16, when he made his first team debut in the Premier League. His talent is recognized and respected by other international players and coaches. An attack minded midfielder with superb technique and the vision of a much more experienced footballer, he will be looked to by the England management to provide much needed creativity in the centre of the park. Although he is generally shorter than the competition for an England start, he is dynamic, comfortable in possession, good at pressing, brave and tenacious and can easily take control of a game – something England will need to do if they want to make it out of their group.

The Ox

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was selected to take part in the Euro Cup 2012 and is expected to play at the World Cup in Brazil having recovered from the knee injury that kept him sidelined for five months earlier this season. A very quick and powerful midfielder with explosive talent, Alex may be relied on for his direct play, versatility and powerful shooting. Dynamism on the wings and through the middle is something England have lacked for a long time and The Ox has few peers with a similar skill set so should find game time easy to come by.

Kieran Gibbs

Kieran Gibbs missed out on playing in the 2010 World Cup but has since developed into one of the best left-backs in the league. Able to keep the highly competent Spanish international left-back, Nacho Monreal, out of the Arsenal team Kieran should be able to muscle his way on to the plane if fit. The modern full-back, possessed of great pace, crossing ability, stamina and equal ability in attack and defence Gibbs has found his path to the national team blocked over the years. Mostly his international aims have been stopped by injury but on occasion it has been the presence of experienced players like Cole and Baines. However, with Cole overlooked at Chelsea in favour of an out of position right-back he should find his way to Brazil, albeit as most likely an understudy.

Were it not for injury we would be talking about Theo Walcott flying to Brazil with his Arsenal mates. However, a pesky cruciate ligament injury has forced him out for 6 months and there is no way he will make the team barring a small miracle. The England staff would certainly like this miracle to occur but I’m not sure even the most patriotic Gooner would want to see him rushed back like Beckham in 2002.

A super sprinter who instills fear in his opponents thanks to his much improved decision making, dribbling and excellent finishing abilities – he will be sorely missed. With his raw pace, instinct and ability to play as a striker and a winger he could have pestered his team to victory in the group stages by exposing slow and weak defenders but hopefully he’ll benefit from the rest and help fire Arsenal to glory next season.
